Founded in 1881, the American Association of University Women (AAUW) is open to all graduates who hold an associate or equivalent, baccalaureate, or higher degree from a qualified educational institution. AAUW promotes equity for all womenand girls, lifelong education, and positive societal change. AAUW is currently the leading advocate of gender equity in the schools.
AAUW is organized into national (Association), state (Florida), and branch (Tallahassee) levels and is affiliated with the International Federation of University Women (IFUW). The Tallahassee Branch, the second oldest branch in Florida, was established in 1923.
In addition to its membership organization, AAUW has two additional corporations:
¨ AAUW's Educational Foundation (EF) provides funds to advance education, research, and self-development for women and to foster equity and positive societal change. EF has published a number of major studies on such topics as gender equity in the schools, sexual harassment in the schools, and educating girls in the new computer age.
Both individuals and branches may apply for funds for special research or projects. During 1992-93 the Tallahassee Branch was the recipient of one of these grants. Our $1,800 grant enabled the branch to hold gender equity workshops with teachers in Leon County Schools and to publish a brochure for teachers summarizing AAUW's report on gender equity. In 2001 the branch was awarded a Florida AAUW mini grant for its current Tech Savy Project, which included an workshop for Leon County teachers.
¨ AAUW's Legal Advocacy Fund (LAF) provides funding and a support system for women seeking judicial redress for sex discrimination, especially targeting women in academia. AAUW values and seeks a diverse membership.
